Yesterday morning, Shanghai woke up after a holiday week of National Day to flooded apartments, blocked roads and vehicles submerged in water. 60 parks and city zoo have been closed as residents wade through flood waters after heavy rains hit the financial hub in the aftermath of Typhoon Fitow. According to official Xinhua News Agency, Shanghai had been hit with six inches f rain, the highest single-day total sine 1961.
I made plans to visit my Third uncle’s new residence with my mother and Second uncle. We had to cancel the day trip due to the stormy weather and terrible road conditions. So I was left with a day of having little to do and I couldn’t remember the last time when I was handed with such luxury of life. Joe was determined to make his important appointment. He took the subway to Songjiang and luckily got there without too much trouble.
After breakfast, I walked about 200 meters to the Salon downstairs to get my hair dyed. That short-distance walk almost got soaked. Half of the staff that reported to work were busy styling their own hair or putting on makeup. I was their first customer of the day! As I was sitting there with plastic film wrapped around my head and WeChatting with my high school classmates, the store manager tried to persuade me to deposit more money into my membership account in order to get deeper discounts. I said I’d think about it. Most of my classmates have ‘sophisticated’ alias names on WeChat. I asked for suggestions for a new name for me. Finally we settled on “海芝心”. I think it’s cool! After two hours’ of beauty treatment, it was time to pay for my chestnut hair and I managed to get out of the door without putting more money into my account. Joe should be proud of me!
After lunch, I picked up the book “The One-Minute Manager” given to me by a colleague but felt sleepy shortly after. I went into our room to take a nap. Jake came in almost every half an hour to inform me that he had finished one task and was moving on to the next one according to the schedule we made together. He kissed me with “I love you” a few times. Once he asked if I’d like a massage. I told my little guy it was out of the world after receiving his enthused rubbing. Finally Jake curled next to me and fell asleep too. We didn’t wake up until Joe came home before dinner.
Yesterday was a historical day in Shanghai in terms of water accumulation. For me, it was a restful and non-event day with little going on. But come to think of it, a lot actually happened out of nothing!
